ɫ��ɫ in Top 10 of Nation’s Public Universities for 5th Year

School pride will be swelling among ɫ��ɫ, students as they start fall classes Wednesday (Sept. 24).

The campus tied for No. 9 among the nation’s top public universities and earned accolades for innovation, social mobility and more in the 2026 U.S. News Best Colleges rankings, published Monday (Sept. 22).

This is the fifth consecutive year the campus has been ranked among the media outlet’s top 10 public universities.

Big Bang! Business Competition Celebrates 25 Years of Empowering Entrepreneurs

Benjamin Wang ’06, a medical doctor, brought his life-saving innovation to the ɫ��ɫ Big Bang! Business Competition in 2014. His team won first place — and Wang credited the experience with helping him launch the venture.

After witnessing a patient die from an antibiotic-resistant infection, he developed NEVAP — a breathing tube designed to prevent bacterial infections in ventilated patients.

"Winning the competition helped to validate the idea that creating a better breathing tube was possible and viable as a business," Wang said.

ɫ��ɫ Joins New $285 Million CHIPS Semiconductor Research Institute

The ɫ��ɫ will be part of a new, $285 million nationwide institute dedicated to advancing research and manufacturing of American semiconductors.

The new institute, known as SMART USA (Semiconductor Manufacturing and Advanced Research with Twins USA) will develop, validate and use digital twins to improve domestic semiconductor design, manufacturing, advanced packaging, assembly and test processes.

Animal and Veterinary Innovation Center Established at ɫ��ɫ

ɫ��ɫ is one of four institutions nationwide selected by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to establish Animal and Veterinary Innovation centers to help spur innovation and advance regulatory decisions.

The ɫ��ɫ Intentional Genomic Alteration Innovation Center will focus on genome editing of livestock like pigs, sheep and cattle to support science-based regulations that demonstrate the safety of the technology and pave the way for human consumption of edited animals.

ɫ��ɫ Joins New NSF I-Corps Hub, Part of National Innovation Network

The ɫ��ɫ, will partner in one of three new NSF Innovation Corps (NSF I-Corps) Hubs announced today (Oct. 30) by the U.S. National Science Foundation. The new hubs will scale the NSF-led National Innovation Network (NIN), accelerating the translation of discoveries into new solutions that benefit society and the economy.

ɫ��ɫ Exceeds $1 Billion in Research Awards for Third Consecutive Year

The ɫ��ɫ, once again exceeded $1 billion in new external research awards in the fiscal year 2023-24, surpassing the amount received in the previous year by $33 million. The funding, which totaled $1.039 billion, will enable scientific discoveries and innovations addressing a wide range of global needs.
